Open Question: Native resolution does not appear...?

I have a 19" LCD screen with a native resolution of 1440x900 that uses a VGA cable. The problem is this VGA cable is off eBay and doesn't give the native resolution. I have a quality brand (Dick Smith) cable that shows the native resolution but with it the screen goes blue and the plug is huge so it doesn't fit very well at the back of the screen. I can set a custom resolution but it becomes warped and doesn't fit the edges of the screen properly, is there any other way I can force the custom resolution with my cheap VGA cable, I don't want to spend another $30 on a cable with plugs that are too big....
